The story.
Curiosity
On the first of December, a detective sergeant stands in a dead man’s flat in Peckham and looks at his wall: thirty-nine photographs of strangers, taken from across the road, joined pin to pin by a red thread across a map of the city. Three of the faces are children. Under each pin hangs a sealed envelope.
Arthur Bell was eighty-one, and nobody visited him. His will gives a trainee solicitor, Priya Shah, until Christmas Eve to deliver every envelope by hand, the fortieth first. DS Kemi Okafor, who believes nobody does anything for nothing, insists on standing behind her at every door.
A year earlier, a fifteen-year-old girl left a glove on the No. 38 bus and did not go back for it.
Forty doors. Forty lives. And one question nobody can answer: who is in charge?

About the author
Ali Solak
Ali Solak has spent more than twenty years in hospitality operations and leadership, running outlets across five countries.
In June 2024 he founded Epicurean Digital Consultants, a London consultancy for independent cafés, restaurants and hospitality brands. He is also the author of Before You Sign the Lease and Allergen Safe. Curiosity is his first novel.
