In detail

What it is, and who it’s for.

An activity journal that turns a child’s “Can we get a dog?” into 30 days of finding out, together.

What it is

A 30-day challenge in four weeks: Think Like a Dog, Daily Dog Duties, Time, Money and Real Life, and Choosing the Right Dog. Each day has a Dog Science page and a mission, and each week ends with a Family Review and a badge to colour.

Who it’s for

Children aged 7 to 12, working through it with a parent, carer or grandparent. It suits families who aren’t sure yet, and families who are sure but want to choose well.

The practice pup

Children pick a soft toy to stand in for a dog. They “walk” it at 7am, measure its meals, brush it and scoop its “poo” (a rolled-up sock), at real dog times, for 30 days.

Choosing well

A 2022 study of 18,385 dogs found breed explains only about 9% of differences in behaviour, so the Match Maker starts with your family’s lifestyle. Twenty dog types each have sliders, honest pros and cons, and example breeds and mixes.

For the grown-ups

The back of the book covers real UK costs from PDSA, Battersea and Blue Cross, the rules in each UK nation, buying a puppy safely, adopting from a rescue and keeping children safe around dogs, with numbered sources.

Before you buy

  • A PDF, not a printed book. You download it and print the pages you need, as often as you like, for your own family. Please don’t share or resell the file.
  • Try the sample first. The free 6-page sample has the Day 1 spread, so your child can try a mission before you buy.
  • How it was made. The text was written with an AI system (Claude, Anthropic) and checked against UK charity, government and research sources, listed at the back. The drawings were made with an AI image model (Google Gemini) and cleaned up for print.

Questions

Will it print on A4?
Yes, at full size. The pages are 8 × 10 in, which fits on A4 and on US Letter with no scaling.
Do we need a real dog?
No. Children use a soft toy as a practice pup. A few missions, such as walking a friend’s dog, need the owner and a grown-up there; each one says so.
What ages is it for?
Children aged 7 to 12, with a grown-up. The grown-ups’ section at the back is written for adults.
What if the answer is “Not yet”?
That’s an honest result, and it has its own certificate. The book helps your family write down what would need to change, and when to try again.
Is it UK-specific?
Yes. Costs are in pounds from UK charities, and the rules cover England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, checked on 28 October 2026.
Is there a paperback?
A paperback of the same book is being prepared for Amazon. This page sells the printable PDF.
